Activity Description

16-Day Summit to Sea Itinerary:

Day 1: 10 June – The Journey Begins
Our adventure through the Kruger National Park comes to an end at O R Tambo International Airport. After we say our farewells to those who joined us for the past 5 days, we head straight for the stunning Drakensberg mountains. Arriving late at night to our beautiful accommodation at the Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge, we settle in, enjoy a well-earned meal, and get ready for the next day.

Day 2: 11 June – Hiking the Tugela Gorge
We rise early and head into the Royal Natal National Park, home to the iconic Tugela falls, the second largest waterfall in the world. The day’s hike is nothing short of spectacular – 14 kilometres, winding through lush valleys and rivers, while the 5km wide and 1.2km high rock wall known as the Amphitheatre towers above us. After conquering the trail, we return to the Amphitheatre Backpackers to relax and recharge.

Day 3: 12 June – Summit Mont-Aux-Sources
Another day filled with epic views awaits, as we tackle the ascent of Mont-Aux-Sources. This hike is not too long but is very rewarding, as we reach the top of the Drakensberg escarpment, where jaw-dropping panoramic views stretch as far as the eye can see. We’ll navigate the famous chain ladders, stand atop the Amphitheatre, and breathe in the mountain air, a staggering 3 300m above sea level, before heading back to our cozy lodge for the night.

Day 4: 13 June – Into the Wild at Hluhluwe-iMofolozi
We hit the road before sunrise, travelling towards the renowned Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Reserve – famous for its white rhino conservation programme. After checking in at the reserve, we embark on a game drive, warming up our game viewing skills for our thrilling walk in the wilderness. In the evening, just before sunset, we embark on a guided wilderness walk, where we’ll explore the bush on foot. With an experienced guide at our side, we immerse ourselves as animals in the veld, before retreating to our rondawel accommodation under the African stars.

Day 5: 14 June – Coastal Escape to Cintsa
Leaving the reserve behind, we embark on a long but scenic drive to the pristine beaches of Cintsa. Nestled along the Wild Coast, this little paradise offers the perfect place to unwind. Buccaneers Beach Lodge will be our home for the next two nights, giving you time to kick back, explore, and enjoy the laid-back coastal vibes.

Day 6: 15 June – A Day in Cintsa
A free day to do as much or as little as you like! You can spend time on the beach, which is just a stone’s throw from your room, take a paddle down the river, or simply relax at the lodge. This a day to recharge and soak in the beauty of the Wild Coast.

Day 7: 16 June – Surf’s Up in Jeffrey’s Bay
After breakfast, we continue our journey along the coast to Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa’s most famous surf town. With golden beaches and world-class waves, which are perfect for beginners, J-bay is a haven for ocean lovers. We check into Island Vibe Backpackers, with stunning views of the Indian Ocean, and enjoy the town’s buzzing atmosphere.

Day 8: 17 June – Enter the Garden Route
The day starts with an energising activity in J-bay, whether it be a surf lesson, Stand Up Paddleboard lesson, or a yoga session. After some beach vibes and a hearty breakfast, we pack up and drive to our next stop – Tsitsikamma, and the official start of the Garden Route! Surrounded by thick indigenous forests, we explore the Tsitsikamma village, and maybe even go bungy jumping (if you’re up for it!)

Day 9: 18 June – Exploring Tsitsikamma National Park
We spend the morning discovering Tsitsikamma National Park, home to rugged coastline, dense forests, and the breathtaking swing-bridge over the river mouth. Whether it’s enjoying the views or spotting marine life in the turquoise waters, there’s plenty to see. In the afternoon we head to Knysna, known as the heart of the Garden Route, this town is the definition of picturesque, boasting amazing seafood restaurants all around the Knysna lagoon. Eat a hearty dinner before we settle in at Island Vibe Backpackers, Knsyna.

Day 10: 19 June – A Taste of Knysna’s Culture
The morning takes us to Judah Square, home to one of South Africa’s largest Rastafarian communities. Here you’ll gain insight into their fascinating culture and way of life. After an immersive township tour, we continue inland to Oudtshoorn, known as the ostrich capital of the world, where you’ll enjoy a cozy stay in the Karoo’s vast landscapes.

Day 11: 20 June – Ostrich Farm & Hike Preparation
A relaxed morning in Oudtshoorn while exploring an ostrich farm, gives you time to soak in the charm of the Karoo. Enjoy a slow breakfast amongst these Jurassic-like birds, before we venture toward the starting point of the Whale Trail. We stock up on all our supplies before reaching Potberg Hut, which will be our base for the night, and the official starting point of our trail.

Day 12-16: 21-25 June – The Epic Whale Trail
Get ready for one of South Africa’s most breath-taking multi-day hikes! Over five days, you’ll traverse dramatic cliffs, fynbos-covered hills, and remote beaches, all while keeping an eye out for the southern right whales in the waters below. This is a true back-to-nature experience, where each night is spent in rustic huts, surrounded by the untouched beauty of the De Hoop Nature Reserve. Enjoy a fully equipped braai area and kitchen, with porters who’ll make sure we have a cold beer and something to put on the braai each night! The huts are equipped with solar panels for electricity and a hot shower. On the final day, we wrap up the hike and journey back to Stellenbosch, bringing our adventure to an unforgettable close.
